If we look into the definitions of trust we find that trust itself can be defined in a variety of ways with the common theme being that trust itself invokes a reliance or confidence in something or someone. This reliance and confidence can be in the other persons integrity, ability, emotions, or surety. In normal relationships trust is developed over time between individuals. It is not something that is automatic unless the person being entrusted has some other quality or history that brings with it a level of expected reliance or confidence.
Trust itself is a critical element that is necessarily present in all functioning societies. It permeates within all cultures and societies to some extent and its presence is critical in love, families, associations, business, politics, and economics. In fact, without trust the entire fabric of a particular society could easily break down and crumble. It is our trust in the rules, laws, and customs of our culture that cause us to behave in a certain way and we rely upon and trust in these mores as the foundation for our daily decisions.
This trust, reliance, and confidence in our cultural mores and fellow man form an inevitable bond between all members of a society that is founded upon believing that others will behave, act, and transact business and relationships in a predictable manner. This trust forms a bond within a society that when strong makes the society cohesive and impenetrable, but when broken produces a society in rapid decline.
Personal Trust and Bonding
In interpersonal relationships we are constantly forced into situations where we must have trust in others. This trust leads us to form bonds and relationships that rely on each other to maintain that bond through reinforcing behavior and actions. Trust such as this is the foundation of interpersonal relationships and is the basis for not only friendship, but also love and emotional bonding. Trust is the foundation on which an entire relationship is built upon.
Trust itself is normally earned over time as individuals interact with each other and learn who they can and cannot rely upon to maintain the integrity of the relationship and bond. This is a process that can take days, weeks, or years depending upon the culture or the group that is developing the trust.
When a person is trusted by an established group it gives them a power within that group. It gives them more credibility than an outsider would have because the group has developed, over time, a trust and confidence in that individual. This is the same within romantic relationships. When a person has developed trust over time it gives them access to emotions and deep relationships with individuals that they would not have had access to without having built trust.
Manipulating Trust
Imagine the power if a person could circumvent the time it takes to build trust and tap directly into the brain’s and emotions of individuals and groups in order to develop a level of instant trust. Imagine the edge it would give a person in business, relationships, or even in swaying group or individual opinion. If a person were able to somehow develop unearned trust in an instant, it could make a significant difference in the impact that person could have over others.
For example, imagine making a sales presentation to a corporate board of directors. To this group, you are an outsider looking to gain benefit from their decision on your presentation. This, by its very nature, a situation where you would want to build trust and credibility as quickly as possible. If you could artificially boost the trust that the board has in you as a person, your presentation will be received better than it would without that trust.
Another example would be in an interpersonal relationship. Whether it be within a romantic relationship or just a friendship. Being able to amplify the trust level above what it would be under normal circumstances could provide a person with power or leverage within that relationship in order to gain some advantage.
Oxytocin Artificially Creates Trust
Oxytocin is a natural hormone that is produced by the body for a number of purposes all of which are not known. What is known is that it is released into the body during times of intimacy and trust. There have been countless studies that have not only isolated the body’s natural production of oxytocin at critical times of trust and confidence but dozens of additional studies that have proven that intranasal administration can artificially create trust and bonding between individuals.
Intranasal administration is simply a scientific way of describing the breathing in of oxytocin through the nose. This is an important factor in the use of oxytocin. It is one thing to identify a hormone that will affect emotions and create trust, but administering that hormone to another person or group of persons would be difficult. Fortunately oxytocin is best administered through the nose, therefore if a person were to have oxytocin on their body or clothes, as they would a cologne or perfume, then when others smell, or breathe that scent in through their nose, they will be subjected to the trust affect of the oxytocin.
The trust that is built with oxytocin is not a miracle or drastic change in behavior that would be noticeable by others. The trust that is built is subconscious. It taps into the kinesthetic nature of the individual and bypasses the conscious and logic barriers to trust that are normally present. Oxytocin will not cause individuals to make decisions that are starkly against their best interest. But it will reduce inhibitions and give an extra edge of credibility and mutual confidence to a relationship.
This scent does not have to be strong, in fact it can be masked to have no scent. But just because something does not smell, does not mean that the other person is not breathing it in.
Oxytocin – Not A Miracle But A Byproduct Of Our Chemical Nature
The fact that science has found a chemical that can affect individuals emotionally should not be considered a miracle or beyond belief. This is because there are already countless chemicals and hormones that science has found to alter the mind, feelings, and any number of mental and physical conditions.
Just as Prozac, Oxazepam, Ritalin, and other psychiatric drugs directly affect mental process, oxytocin affects the way a person trusts. This is pure science. The internal systems and mind associate the production of natural oxytocin with trust. It stands to reason that administering oxytocin to the body and mind through the nasal cavity would bring about the same emotional response. Just as the body produces adrenaline under stress a relaxed person can experience the rush of adrenaline if it is artificially administered. Oxytocin is no different, it is a proven medical and psychiatric element that artificially boosts trust.
